We won.. We now have a cemetery for our children!
"The title phrase" appeared in an amazing text by the late novelist and storyteller Elias Khoury, Lebanese by nationality, Palestinian by heart, pen and tongue, in which he described, in words unlike any other, the overwhelming pain in the hearts of the survivors of the horrific massacre that took place in the Sabra and Shatila camps on September 16, 1982.
The resistance fighter narrates his observations during his participation in the commemoration of the first anniversary of the massacre, saying: “As I approached the Kuwaiti embassy roundabout, I was struck with astonishment and inability to understand, while I heard strange voices coming from Shatila camp. I found myself in the middle of a group of women dressed in black, waving Palestinian flags and ululating. What is happening? For whom are the women ululating? I asked a woman who approached me.
We won.. the woman screamed. What..? I asked. We now have a cemetery for our children, we finally won.. the woman screamed, leaving me alone and confused, to join the crowds walking towards the end of the street. I walked with them to find myself in front of an empty lot, devoid of any sign indicating its location. That land was the mass grave where 1,500 victims were buried.
I wonder what the national warrior would have written about the victories achieved in Gaza and Lebanon, if he had lived longer?!
Stop the genocide now..!
