Türkiye calls for increased pressure on Israel to stop war in Gaza
Türkiye called on the international community to immediately increase pressure on Israel to completely stop its attacks on the Gaza Strip.
“The genocide in Gaza is the most visible sign of the legitimacy crisis of the international system, casting a shadow over the reliability of multilateral institutions,” Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said.
Israel's attacks on the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and its designation of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) as a terrorist organization are another blatant position by the Israeli government, whose Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ignores the international system, Fidan added in a speech at a media forum in Istanbul on Saturday.
He pointed out that Israel's expansion of its attacks on Lebanon and Iran shows Netanyahu's mistake, but while Netanyahu continues his "barbaric violence," some countries remain silent, and even prevent international organizations from stopping him. This situation clearly reveals the hypocrisy of the international system towards Israel and its double standards.
He stressed that as a result, the current international system cannot produce peace and stability, nor provide justice or equality, explaining that the current deadlock in the UN Security Council is an example of this. Fidan pointed out that the continued support of weapons and ammunition to Israel makes it more aggressive, which is why Turkey, with the support of 52 countries and two international organizations, took the initiative to send a joint letter on this issue to the United Nations. He stressed the need to respect international law and hold accountable the perpetrators of the ongoing war crimes in Gaza.
Fidan stressed that if an agreement is not reached on the basis of the two-state solution, peace cannot be achieved in any other way for a long time.
The Turkish Foreign Minister expressed his confidence that the Palestinian people will inevitably enjoy a free, secure and prosperous life on their land under the umbrella of their state.
In a message published on his Twitter account on the occasion of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, which falls on November 29, Fidan said that the Palestinian people have waged an honorable struggle without giving up their just cause despite the injustice and oppression they have been subjected to since 1947.
He added that “the Palestinians, who have not given up their land and have defended their identity and future, also represent faith in international law and universal human values, and that history has proven time and again that injustice does not last,” noting that international support for the Palestinian people’s struggle is increasing day by day, and that the voices of countries and individuals with a living conscience are becoming louder.
Fidan reiterated Türkiye's determination to continue working with the Palestinian people and the international community to achieve justice and peace.
