US, Canada impose sanctions on Samidoun movement supporting Palestinian prisoners

The United States has imposed sanctions on the Palestinian prisoner support network Samidoun, accusing the organization of being a “fake charity” that raises funds for a blacklisted left-wing Palestinian political faction.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the US Treasury Department said that the Samidoun network operates as an international fundraising entity for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, which Washington has designated as a "terrorist" group.

“Organizations like Samidoun masquerade as charities claiming to provide humanitarian support to those in need, but in reality divert funds intended for much-needed aid to support terrorist groups,” Treasury official Bradley Smith said in the statement, a copy of which was received by Al-Quds.

The United States imposed the sanctions in coordination with the Canadian government, which on Tuesday designated Samidoun as a “terrorist entity.”

Canada said the group "has close ties to and supports the interests" of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, which is also listed as a "terrorist" organization in the country, and that it had designated the pro-Palestinian Samidoun group as a terrorist entity in a joint effort with the United States.

In announcing the move, the two governments said Samidoun, also known as the Palestinian Prisoners Solidarity Network, has close ties to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine is listed as a terrorist entity in Canada, the United States, and the European Union.

“The United States is committed to working with our partners to expose and deter those who exploit humanitarian motives to further their malign goals,” the statement said. “Today, in coordination with Canada, we are sanctioning the Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network, a front-line charity that serves as an international fundraiser for the terrorist organization the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.”

The US government alleges that “the PFLP uses the Samidoun network to maintain fundraising operations in both Europe and North America. We are also designating Khaled Barakat, a member of the PFLP leadership, as a terrorist.”
