EU Foreign Ministers Express Appallment Over Humanitarian Situation in Gaza

EU foreign ministers expressed alarm at the humanitarian situation in Gaza, calling for an agreement on a ceasefire.

"This is essentially a war against the Palestinians now," Irish Foreign Minister Micheál Martin said, describing the civilian casualties as "unconscionable."

In turn, Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billström said, "The enormous suffering of the civilian population in Gaza must end."

Belgian Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib described the occupation's aggression in Gaza as a "tragedy and humanitarian catastrophe," warning of an escalation of violence in the West Bank.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock joined calls for a ceasefire, saying: "The situation in the West Bank must not be allowed to explode."

In this context, the Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs and Reconstruction in Gaza, Sigrid Kaag, stressed that the destruction and human suffering in Gaza "we have not witnessed in the twenty-first century to this extent."
