Trump reveals deep talks with Iran, threatens military option if they fail

US President Donald Trump revealed that his administration is moving towards a new diplomatic path with Tehran, confirming the suspension of aerial military strikes that had targeted Iranian sites. Trump explained that this decision was made to give negotiations a final chance to reach a comprehensive settlement that would end the escalating tension in the region.

The US President indicated in press statements that the United States is currently engaged in what he described as very deep talks with the Iranian side. He stressed that the continuation of this path depends on achieving tangible and rapid results, warning that failure would mean an immediate return to widespread and strong military action against Iranian targets.

The agenda of the current negotiations focuses on vital issues, foremost among them securing international navigation and reopening the Strait of Hormuz to global trade. Washington also seeks, through these efforts, to formulate a new and comprehensive nuclear agreement that ensures addressing all the loopholes that marred previous agreements with Tehran.

Sultanate of Oman plays a pivotal role in leading these direct talks, while Qatar, Egypt, and Pakistan contribute to mediation efforts to bridge viewpoints. The American team in this diplomatic mission is led by Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who are working in coordination with regional mediators to reach a satisfactory agreement formula.

Trump explained that the decision to temporarily cease fire was made last Friday, in response to urgent requests from mediating countries that saw the need to give diplomacy additional space. He affirmed that the regional leaders who contacted him urged him to exercise caution and avoid military escalation at the present time to allow for political solutions.

In his reading of the Iranian position, Trump expressed his belief that Tehran has a genuine desire to reach an agreement that ends the current crisis. He noted that his decision to suspend attacks did not result in any strategic losses, but rather contributed to the stability of global markets, as oil prices fell and stock exchanges rebounded immediately after the decision was issued.

On the parallel diplomatic front, the White House is preparing to receive Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu next Tuesday. The Iranian file and the developments of the ongoing negotiations are expected to top the agenda of the bilateral summit, amid cautious Israeli anticipation of the results that regional mediation may yield.

For his part, Netanyahu stated before his departure to Washington that the current stage requires a mixture of firmness and wisdom in dealing with security challenges. He affirmed that his top priority remains protecting Israel's security and confronting Iranian threats, while at the same time seeking to expand the circle of regional peace to serve common interests.

These developments come after a two-week US air campaign, in which Washington targeted several sites in response to attacks on its bases in the region. It is worth noting that Israel did not directly participate in that air campaign, despite the close intelligence and security coordination it has with the US administration in confronting Iranian influence.

The upcoming meeting between Trump and Netanyahu is the eighth since the US President assumed his duties in the new term, and the first since last February. This summit is of particular importance as it comes at a sensitive time when the White House is balancing between the options of comprehensive military escalation or engaging in a major political settlement with Tehran.
