Report: 70% of killed and wounded in the Gaza Strip are women and children

A report prepared by the Palestinian Local Empowerment Organization (REFORM) stated that 70% of the dead and wounded were children and women.

The Director General of the Foundation, Adi Abu Karsh, explained during a press conference held today, Thursday, in the city of Ramallah, that the report monitors the reality of women in particular, focuses on multiple aspects of the lives of the Palestinian people, and sheds light on a group of psychological and social variables that Palestinian women suffer from.

He added that 88% of those surveyed have limited and intermittent access to toilets, and more than 70% do not get adequate showering, in addition to the lack of sanitary hygiene tools, which is preparing a generation of women suffering from chronic diseases.

Abu Karsh explained that many women are now responsible for supporting their families in light of the martyrdom of the head of the household, and 40% of women receive food daily sometimes, and 29% do not receive food daily.

He pointed out that there is a lack of privacy for 78% of women, as a result of the repeated waves of displacement and living in crowded and closely packed tents.

Abu Karsh added that tens of thousands of families, including women, are unable to provide fuel sources, as they are exposed to wood fuel emissions, which threatens the health system for women in the Gaza Strip.

He added that 68% of women are exposed to physical violence, and 73% are exposed to psychological violence in displacement areas during the war, because they are responsible for providing food as a result of the death of the breadwinner, and 89% of women suffer from symptoms of depression and shock, stressing that the psychological effects that women are exposed to will remain with them after the war.

In turn, Minister of Women's Affairs Mona Al-Khalili said that women are paying the price in the aggression on the Gaza Strip, as they are responsible for the consequences of forced displacement, securing housing, clothing and food for their families, and maintaining the health of their bodies.

She continued, "The aggression is not just numbers and percentages. Every individual in the Strip has a story and a tale. He has a past, present and future, and he has dreams for the future."

Al-Khalili added that with the destruction of schools, and the targeting of schools, teachers and students, girls expressed their concern about their future due to their deprivation of school and university education, and the impact of the aggression on the social fabric due to forced displacement and the difficulty of securing the necessities of life, and psychological violence occupied the highest rates of violence that women were exposed to during the aggression.

She pointed out that the tons of explosives dropped by the occupation on the Gaza Strip threaten the lives of female citizens, as many women do not have the knowledge to deal with the remnants of the aggression, which threatens their future.

She noted that the ministry sought to involve women in relief and recovery efforts, and developed plans for this with all partners, and made progress in some areas. However, according to the study, 57% of women stated that their participation in public life and in providing aid was very low.

She added that the Palestinian government has developed plans to secure the entry of humanitarian aid, taking women's needs into account, and has organised a number of international meetings with all partners to involve women in the relief process and future recovery plans.

She pointed out that the Ministry relies on research and facts to formulate future policies, document the effects of aggression on women in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including Jerusalem, and take them to international courts to punish the occupation.
