Iran: Assassination of Ismail Haniyeh would not have been possible without US support

Iran's acting foreign minister, Ali Bagheri Kani, said the assassination of Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh would not have been possible without the green light and intelligence support from the United States.

According to a statement issued by the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Bagheri Kani made the remarks at an extraordinary ministerial meeting held by the Executive Committee of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation on Wednesday in the Saudi city of Jeddah to discuss Haniyeh's assassination, among other issues.

Baqeri Kani described Haniyeh's assassination as "just one example of Israel's terrorist crimes," saying it was "a blatant aggression against Iran's national sovereignty and territorial integrity."

Bagheri Kani called on the UN Security Council to hold Israel accountable for these violations, and to bring those responsible to trial and punish them.

He said that the responsibility of the United States, as the main supporter of Israel in its "heinous crime", which would not have been possible without the green light and intelligence support from the United States, should not be overlooked.

Bagheri Kani added that if no appropriate action is taken by the UN Security Council, Iran will have no choice but to use its "inherent right to legitimate self-defense in the face of Israel's aggression."

He stressed that Iran taking such a measure is necessary to prevent further Israeli "aggressions" against Iran's national sovereignty, its people and its lands, noting that this measure will be taken at the "appropriate time and in the appropriate manner."
