Israel stops depositing Palestinian clearance funds in Norway
Israel cancelled the settlement by depositing the Palestinian Authority’s clearance revenues in Norway, in response to Oslo’s recognition of an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital, and the statements of its Foreign Minister, Espen Barth Eide, against Israel during the war of extermination on Gaza.
The Israeli political-security cabinet recently made the decision to cancel the settlement, and it was announced today, Wednesday, according to the Ynet website.
The Israeli government considers this decision to be a "punitive measure" against Norway, due to its policy against the war on Gaza, and after it sent a legal opinion to the International Criminal Court in The Hague, the day before yesterday, in which it confirmed that there is no objection to issuing international arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Galant, on suspicion of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip.
Norway said in its view that the Oslo Accords had nothing to do with the decision on the authority of the International Criminal Court to issue international arrest warrants against Netanyahu and Galant, which the court's chief prosecutor, Karim Khan, announced that he had requested to be issued.
It is worth noting that Norway is the sponsor of the Oslo Accords, and its position before the International Criminal Court is of great importance.
Last January, the Israeli political-security cabinet approved the deposit of the clearance funds that Israel collects on behalf of the Palestinian Authority in Norway, after the Israeli Finance Minister, Bezalel Smotrich, refused to transfer the dues allocated to the Gaza Strip, while the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah refused to receive the dues allocated to the West Bank only.
Smotrich announced today that Israel will not transfer clearance dues to the Palestinian Authority and Norway. Norway has collected about a billion shekels in clearance dues so far, according to Ynet. After Norway recognized the Palestinian state, Smotrich demanded that it return the clearance funds it has.
Ynet reported that Israel is looking, through the United States, into an agreement with a third country to replace Norway. Israeli Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer recently visited Switzerland and held talks on the matter, so that the clearance funds would be transferred there, but Dermer's office denied this.
