EU: 30,680 settlement units built in the West Bank during the year
A European Union report revealed that "Israel has built 30,680 settlement units in the occupied West Bank since the arrival of Benjamin Netanyahu's government."
According to the report, the year 2023 "witnessed the construction of 18,333 settlement units in Jerusalem, while 12,349 units were built in the West Bank."
The report said, "The number of settlement units built in the West Bank is the highest since the signing of the Oslo Accords."
He pointed out that "the establishment of settlement units increased by 180 percent in 5 years."
He stressed that "the expansion of settlement units cuts off communication between East Jerusalem and the West Bank, and this complicates the chances of realizing the two-state solution."
The report spoke of a "worrying" development through "attaching the settlement administration to the Israeli Ministry of Defense, but under the authority of Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich."
He stated that "civil society organizations and legal experts criticized this, as the temporary nature of the administration that serves the interests of the population occupied by the army is supposed to be separate from the civil administration of the occupying state, and they said that this will pave the way for the annexation of those settlement outposts."
The report added that "settlement expansion plans were accompanied by an increase in settler violence in the occupied territories."
He pointed out that the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs recorded the highest number of incidents of violence by settlers in a year since the United Nations began recording such incidents in 2006.
