Families of victims in Majdal Shams refuse to meet Netanyahu
Representatives of some of the families of the victims in Majdal Shams refused to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who tried to coordinate a meeting with some of the families, according to what the newspaper "Haaretz" reported on Sunday evening.
The newspaper reported that the Prime Minister's Office tried to coordinate a meeting between Netanyahu and some representatives of the families of the victims in Majdal Shams, but this was rejected, following the killing of 12 children and the injury of about 40 as a result of a rocket falling on a playground in the town.
According to the newspaper, "senior officials in Netanyahu's office contacted some of the relatives of the dead in an attempt to arrange a meeting to be held today or tomorrow, but they were told that they preferred not to meet with the prime minister." Netanyahu's office declined to comment on the report.
Earlier today, residents of Majdal Shams in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights opposed the participation of Knesset members and ministers in Netanyahu's government in the funeral ceremonies for the victims, and demanded that they leave. They also refused to allow them to give speeches.
Videos have been circulating showing residents protesting the visit of ministers, including Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, Economy Minister Nir Barkat, Education Minister Yoav Kisch, Environmental Protection Minister Idit Silman, and Energy Minister Eli Cohen.
“Get out of here, you criminal, we don’t want you in the Golan,” one Majdal Shams resident shouted at Smotrich. Another said, “You came here just to dance on the blood of our children.”
Local leaders had sent a message to Israeli ministers not to come to Majdal Shams under the pretext of attending the funeral, due to the sensitivity of the situation and to prevent the massacre from turning into a political event.
