Guterres transmits the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice on the Israeli occupation to the General Assembly
Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesman for the Secretary-General of the United Nations, said that Secretary-General António Guterres will immediately transmit the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice on procedures relating to the legal consequences arising from Israel’s policies and practices in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, to the United Nations General Assembly. United Nations, which includes 193 members, and “it is up to the General Assembly to decide how to proceed with the matter.”
The spokesman said that the Secretary-General reiterates his call on Israel and the Palestinians to participate “in the long-awaited political path towards ending the occupation and resolving the conflict in line with international law, relevant UN resolutions and bilateral agreements.”
Haq added that Guterres also stressed that the two-state solution is “the only viable path” to seeing Israel and “a fully independent, democratic, interconnected, viable and sovereign Palestinian state” living alongside each other in peace and security.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations also renewed his urgent call for a humanitarian ceasefire and the unconditional release of all prisoners detained in Gaza.
