UNRWA calls for an “independent investigation” into the bombing of a school in central Gaza

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) called on Sunday for an “independent investigation” into Israel’s bombing of an agency school housing two thousand displaced people in the Nuseirat camp in the central Gaza Strip.

This came in a statement published by the Agency’s Commissioner General, Philippe Lazzarini, on his account on the “X” platform.

The UNRWA Commissioner said: “Nine months after the brutal war in Gaza, I once again call for a ceasefire.”

He added, "The longer the war lasts, the deeper the rift becomes and the more the population suffers."

Lazzarini continued, saying that “we take very seriously the repeated allegation (among others) from Israel that our facilities are being used by Palestinian armed groups, and that is precisely why I have repeatedly called for independent investigations to ascertain the facts and identify those responsible for the attacks on UN buildings.” or misuse.”

The Director-General of UNRWA noted that "more than half of the agency's facilities were bombed, killing 520 people and wounding nearly 1,600 others."

He stressed the need to hold those responsible for violating international law accountable.

On Saturday, the Israeli army claimed that it targeted Palestinian gunmen inside the UNRWA Al-Jaouni School, which houses displaced people in the Nuseirat camp, resulting in the death of 16 Palestinians and the injury of 50 others.

The Israeli army claimed in a statement that its forces "attacked (saboteurs) who were present inside the UNRWA Al-Jaouni School compound, which was used as a command headquarters for Hamas militants, from where they directed attacks against our forces."

In response to these allegations, Hamas explained, in a statement, that the Israeli army “is trying, through its claim, to pass on and market its crimes to public opinion, and to hide its clear goals that it seeks to implement, by exterminating our Palestinian people and destroying all aspects of life in the Gaza Strip.”
