UNRWA: Tons of waste surround the tents of displaced people in the central Gaza Strip

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) said on Wednesday that tons of waste are surrounding the tents of displaced people in the central Gaza Strip, in light of the leakage of sewage and the spread of intestinal and skin diseases.

The UN agency added, in a report: “With the decrease in safe spaces in which the displaced could pitch their tents and reside in the central Gaza Strip, tons of waste and sewage seemed to besiege them in their tents in light of the spread of intestinal and skin diseases.”

UNRWA spokeswoman Louise Waterridge said, according to the report: “Agency employees were prevented from accessing waste dumps by the Israeli authorities, while many of our sanitation centers and waste disposal machines and trucks were destroyed.”

It added: "Rising temperatures create more problems, not only bad odors, but also the spread of diseases and pests such as mice, rats and mosquitoes, which increase the spread of diseases."

This comes in light of the loss of some medicines that contribute to the treatment of widespread skin and intestinal diseases, as the Ministry of Health says that 70 percent of the medicines are missing and its stores are almost running out of specialized treatments.

The displaced also complain of the lack of means and tools for cleaning and personal hygiene, in light of the scarcity of water, which exacerbates this crisis.
