Prisoners’ Authority: The war of starvation and isolation continues against Palestinian female prisoners

The policy of torture and punishments imposed on female prisoners is not considered a new thing, but their severity and intensity have doubled since October 7, 2023. The female prisoners have been completely isolated from the outside world, stripped of their most basic rights, such as clothing and personal supplies, and they have been subjected to hunger and deprivation of food. The right to treatment despite the sensitivity of the health status of women with chronic diseases.

In addition to the physical harm and oppression they are exposed to during arrest and imprisonment, psychological warfare and harassment during strip searches, in addition to constant threats against their families.

The lawyer for the Prisoners and Ex-Prisoners’ Affairs Authority confirmed, after her recent visit to Damoun Prison, that with the advent of the summer season, there has been greater restrictions on the female prisoners, as the temperatures are very high, the rooms are closed and no air can enter, and all the fans have been withdrawn, and this coincided with great overcrowding in the rooms. In the room that can accommodate 5 female prisoners, there are 10 in it, while the jailer deliberately closes the small window opening on the section doors to prevent air from entering.

The current number of female prisoners is 78, 71 of whom are in Damoun Prison, including 3 from the Gaza Strip (the prisoner Asmaa Shatat, the prisoner Siham Abu Salem and her daughter Suzanne), and two pregnant prisoners (the prisoner Jihad Nakhleh and Aisha Ghaidan). There are also 7 female prisoners under investigation.
