UNRWA: The acute shortage of medicines and fuel in the Gaza Strip hampers life-saving operations
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) said that Palestinian citizens in the Gaza Strip are in dire need of health care, explaining that a small number of its health centers are still operating in the Strip.
She added, in a post on her official page on the “X” platform, today, Thursday, that the severe shortage of medicines and fuel is hampering life-saving operations, stressing that safe and sustainable access to aid cannot be delayed any longer.
In a related context, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said that insecurity and Israeli military operations in the southern Gaza Strip still constitute a major obstacle to humanitarian operations, adding that last week a number of (Israeli) attacks hit the vicinity of the Al-Mawasi area, where many displaced people took refuge. .
The office said that partners working to support health care in Gaza warn that power outages due to fuel shortages continue to endanger the lives of critically ill patients, including newborns, dialysis patients, and those in hospital intensive care departments.
Fuel shortages are also hampering efforts to respond to the water, sanitation and hygiene crisis across the sector, according to OCHA.
The office said that partners working on the response in this area reported that water production from groundwater wells, which is the main source of water supply in Gaza, shrank by more than 50 percent, from 35,000 cubic meters per day to only 15,000 cubic meters.
