The Norwegian Refugee Council warns of an imminent famine in central and southern Gaza Strip
On Thursday, the Norwegian Refugee Council warned of an imminent famine in the central and southern Gaza Strip, which has been witnessing an ongoing Israeli war for more than 9 months.
This came in a statement, in which the council’s education official, Majed Qishawi, spoke about the latest update on the situation in the Gaza Strip.
Qishawi explained, "People began to suffer from famine in the central region and the south."
He added, "All indications say that we will reach a stage where the population will have nothing to eat, if the Rafah crossing, the main source of food supplies, remains closed."
He stressed that "the few food supplies in Gaza cannot last forever."
The Council explained that "the humanitarian response south of the Gaza Valley has almost come to a halt, as a result of escalating security concerns, lack of supplies, and coordination challenges facing humanitarian organizations," according to the statement.
He stressed that "as the needs in the sector continue to increase, the ability of humanitarian workers to respond is diminishing."
