Gallant criticizing Netanyahu: We resolve disputes with Washington in closed rooms... and the latter responds

Israeli Security Minister, Yoav Galant, implicitly criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, against the backdrop of tension in relations between the latter and the administration of US President Joe Biden, as part of a meeting he held with US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan in Washington, today, Wednesday.

Gallant, who has been in Washington for a week, posted a video clip in English in which he thanked the Biden administration for its support for Israel and stressed that the differences between the two countries must be resolved in closed rooms. This is against the backdrop of the crisis created by the video that Netanyahu published last week, in which he accused the Biden administration of stopping the supply of weapons to Israel.

In recent days, Netanyahu made a series of statements, including one in English, in which he accused the US administration of withholding a greater number of military aid to Israel and claimed that this prevents Israel from achieving a “total victory” in its war on the Gaza Strip, amid accusations against Netanyahu. It works to prolong the struggle to remain in power.

In statements he issued prior to the meeting with Sullivan, which is the last meeting he will hold in Washington before returning to Tel Aviv, Gallant stressed that “the goals and objectives in the war (on Gaza) are shared between Israel and the United States,” and added that “sometimes we disagree about the ways to achieve them.” "We resolve disputes in closed rooms in a joint way, and this is a good thing."

Gallant pointed out, according to a statement issued by the Israeli Ministry of Security, that he held a long series of meetings with his American counterpart, Lloyd Austin, Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, and other officials in the American administration. "These meetings are very important and we are now in the summarizing stage," Gallant said.

He continued, "I will now enter to participate in a meeting with the National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan, at the White House, in order to discuss a long series of matters as discussed by friends, including Lebanon, Gaza, and Iran, and the issues related to them, as well as the issue of American weapons supplies to Israel."

He added, "We have common goals, we have common goals, and sometimes we also disagree about the ways to achieve them. We resolve differences in closed rooms in a common way, and this is a good thing." In his remarks in English, Gallant stressed that “the alliance with the United States is one of the pillars of Israeli national security.

“We appreciate the overt and covert support we have received from the United States,” Gallant said. He added that he "sees the Israeli people and the American people as part of one family." He considered that, "As is the case in any family, there are sometimes disagreements, but we resolve them within the home and remain united."

Gallant claimed that Israel fully supports the prisoner exchange deal proposal that President Biden put forward in his speech a few weeks ago. Gallant said: “Hamas must accept the deal or bear the consequences,” and added, “We are committed to returning all hostages to their homes without exception,” in light of Netanyahu’s statement that he is ready to reach a partial agreement with Hamas to return a number of hostages.

Gallant claimed that the war on Gaza is directed against Hamas and not against the civilian population. “I am personally committed to delivering essential humanitarian aid to Gaza,” Gallant said. “We only fight those who try to harm us.” Note that Gallant had himself announced the imposition of the siege on the Gaza Strip in light of the war and described the Gazans as “human animals.”

In this context, Netanyahu’s office responded to Gallant’s statements, saying: “When differences are not resolved for weeks in closed rooms, the Prime Minister of Israel must speak frankly to bring what our fighters need... and this is what happened this time as well.”
