Mexico requests to join South Africa's lawsuit against Israel

The International Court of Justice announced that it had received a request from Mexico to join the genocide case filed by South Africa against Israel against the backdrop of the aggression in the Gaza Strip.

Mexico requested to join the lawsuit filed by South Africa against Israel regarding violations of the 1948 United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.

Mexico's request to intervene was based on Article 63 of the Court's Statute, which "gives other States the right to intervene for the purpose of making a statement on the interpretation of the Convention."

Mexico indicated its desire “to present its point of view on the interpretation of the provisions of the Convention relevant to the case.”

Mexico's announcement comes at a critical and dangerous time, as our Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip, especially in Rafah, are suffering from a catastrophic humanitarian situation, in light of the continued commission of the crime of genocide, and its reaching unprecedented levels of suffering, which highlights the urgent need for justice and the application of the rule of law. Urgent intervention to stop the crimes of the occupation and provide protection for our people.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates welcomed the announcement of the United States Mexican government to intervene under Article 63 of the Rules of the International Court of Justice in the case related to the application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip, submitted by South Africa against Israel.

The ministry said in a statement that Mexico's announcement to intervene in the case expresses its firm commitment to justice, the rule of international law, and the deep solidarity and historical friendship between the two countries.

It renewed its deep thanks and appreciation to the Republic of Nicaragua, the Republic of Colombia, and the State of Libya for their announcements to join this important lawsuit.

The Ministry called on all countries to join and announce active participation in the litigation procedures before the International Court of Justice, to push towards ending the genocide against our Palestinian people, and to end the era of impunity for Israel, the occupying power.
