Borrell: European countries are divided in Palestine and harmonious in Ukraine
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said member states, which had acted harmoniously in the Ukraine-Russia war, were “deeply divided” when it came to Palestine.
This came in the assessment that Borrell presented about developments in Gaza in a lecture at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University in the United States of America.
Borrell pointed out the necessity of starting a political process to strengthen the role of the Palestinian Authority, saying: “We must declare loudly and clearly that the only way to get rid of this tragedy is to reach a two-state solution. No matter how difficult it is, I see no other way to stop this tragedy, which will remain a disgrace.” On the conscience of humanity.
Speaking about Europe being “divided” over what is happening in Palestine, Borrell said: “With some exceptions, they (the European Union countries) are very united against Russia. They are united in supporting Ukraine politically and economically. And regarding Gaza, we are very divided.”
The European official pointed out that the situation in Gaza is terrifying and a cause for concern.
“I was in Gaza between 2008 and 2009,” Borrell said. “I think this is the third or fourth time that Gaza has been destroyed. But this time it is being destroyed from its roots, completely leveled. People are dying, starving and suffering at unimaginable levels.”
Borrell stated that the humanitarian aid provided to Gaza is not sufficient, saying: “You can look at the border through satellite, as I do every morning. On the other side of the border (the city of Rafah), hundreds of thousands of people live in the most severe levels of hunger, according to the United Nations.” While you can see more than a thousand trucks (the Egyptian side) waiting to enter.”
