Washington confirms that it will again oppose Palestine’s request in the UN Security Council

The official spokesman for the US mission to the United Nations, Nate Evans, announced that Washington will once again oppose in the UN Security Council Palestine’s request for full UN membership.

The mission statement said: “Efforts to promote this resolution do not change the fact that the Palestinian Authority does not currently meet the criteria for membership in the United Nations in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations.”

He continued: "If the General Assembly adopts this resolution and returns Palestine's application for membership in the United Nations to the Security Council, we expect the result to be similar to that which occurred in April."

According to Evans, “Adopting this resolution will not lead to tangible changes for Palestinians, will not put an end to the fighting in Gaza, and will not provide the civilian population of Gaza with food, medicine, and shelter.”

He concluded: "American efforts are currently focused on achieving a ceasefire and releasing the hostages, while continuing to provide assistance to the Palestinians in Gaza who are in dire need of it."

Today, Friday, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring the State of Palestine’s eligibility for full membership in the United Nations, and recommends that the Security Council reconsider this issue positively.

Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz launched a major attack on the United Nations after the General Assembly issued the resolution.
