Haaretz: The deal negotiations have reached a critical stage, and Netanyahu is thwarting opportunities for progress

The Hebrew newspaper "Haaretz" published an analysis by its commentator on military affairs, Amos Harel, titled: "The negotiations on the hostage deal have reached a critical point, and Netanyahu's statement thwarts the opportunity for progress."

Harel wrote in his article that the announcement published by Netanyahu in the name of a “senior political official,” according to which he announced that the Israeli army would inevitably enter Rafah, succeeded in provoking angry reactions on both sides of the political map. At the present time, Hamas has not yet submitted its response to the Egyptian proposal, but it is clear that if the response is positive, the pressure will shift to Netanyahu, and the protests will expand.

The newspaper said, “Communications aimed at reaching an exchange deal reached a critical point again at the end of the week. The Egyptian and Qatari mediators, and perhaps the Americans as well, have flooded the Arab media with optimistic expectations about reaching an imminent agreement, with the aim of pushing “Israel” and Hamas to commit to the deal. In practice; It is still unclear whether the Hamas delegation that went to Cairo will answer the mediators affirmatively or with reservations, saying yes but.

The newspaper pointed out that the Biden administration, which greatly fears another explosion in the talks, sent CIA Director William Burns to Cairo.

Benjamin Netanyahu was quick to respond to the optimistic reports that had already been issued during the course of Saturday, in a statement distributed to the Israeli media. Netanyahu, under the guise of a senior political official, declared that “contrary to the leaflets, Israel will in no way agree to the end of the war as part of of the hostage release agreement.

He added that the Israeli army will enter Rafah and destroy the remaining Hamas brigades there, whether a temporary truce is concluded to release the kidnappers or not.

According to the article, Netanyahu's statement sparked angry reactions from both sides of the dispute over the deal in "Israel." Even on the right, there are many who do not believe the empty promises of the Israeli Prime Minister regarding the occupation of Rafah and complete victory.

As for the campaign demanding the release of the kidnapped people, as well as the leadership of the Israeli army, they fear that Netanyahu, through his behavior, is deliberately sabotaging the efforts of the mediators. Moreover, once this matter is revealed with such clarity and in this manner, the dispute will deepen between “Israel” and the United States. Which recently praised “Israel” for its flexibility, and said: “The responsibility for the delay in reaching an agreement lies with Hamas.”

Under the title “Limited Operation in Rafah,” Harel wrote in his article: “The renewed Israeli threat to enter Rafah must be dealt with with caution. The Israeli army is already making preparations to occupy Rafah, but these preparations began, stopped, and then renewed several times in the past three months.” In the telephone conversation between President Joe Biden and Netanyahu, and during the visit of US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, the Americans confirmed that the invasion of Rafah is unacceptable to them, as long as “Israel” does not act in a cautious and systematic manner to evacuate the Palestinian citizens, who number more than a million people. Therefore, it is likely that Israel will resort to... Limited military operation in the city.”

Amos Harel indicated in his article that the American administration is sending hints about possible sanctions on Israel, whether by not using its veto in Security Council resolutions against it, or by slowing down the supply of basic weapons to the Israeli army, especially if the invasion of Rafah will lead to further escalation against Hezbollah and Iran. “Israel” needs strong American support in the event of a multi-front war, but Netanyahu’s partners, Itamar Ben Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, refuse to understand this, and there is also the problem of international legitimacy that continues to worsen. Western countries' support for the IDF's actions has diminished as the war has continued. Any incident resulting in civilian casualties in Rafah will receive global attention, and the Palestinians will attempt to present every incident as an Israeli war crime, as they did in the case of the mass grave that was uncovered near a hospital in Khan Yunis.
