Blinken arrives in Jordan to discuss developments in the war on Gaza

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken arrived in Jordan, on Tuesday, on a visit during which he will meet his counterpart, Ayman Safadi, and King Abdullah II, to discuss the latest developments related to the war on the Gaza Strip.

He will meet Blinken and Safadi, and then the two ministers will go to meet King Abdullah II.

On Sunday, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said that Blinken will extend his tour in the Middle East to visit Jordan and Israel after Saudi Arabia, as part of efforts to reach a ceasefire in Gaza that guarantees the release of Israeli prisoners.

This is Blinken's seventh Middle Eastern tour since the start of the Israeli war on Gaza on October 7, 2023, and it will also lead him to Jordan and Israel, according to the US State Department statement.

Yesterday, Monday, Blinken participated in a meeting with a number of his Arab counterparts, on the sidelines of the Economic Forum in Riyadh.

Blinken's visit comes in light of Egyptian-led movements to reach an agreement between Israel and Hamas, based on new proposals in order to ensure a ceasefire in Gaza and an exchange of prisoners and detainees between the two parties.

The new proposal coincides with Tel Aviv's insistence on launching a military operation in the Palestinian city of Rafah, adjacent to the Egyptian border and crowded with displaced people, despite international fears and warnings, under the pretext that it is "the last stronghold of Hamas."

While neither the Egyptian side nor Hamas issued an official announcement regarding the details of the proposal, the Hebrew newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth said that it “includes the release of the 134 Israeli prisoners (according to Tel Aviv estimates) in 3 stages, starting with 33 prisoners, and then the rest in two stages with a time interval of 10 weeks.

The newspaper pointed out that "Hamas demands the release of 50 prisoners for every Israeli soldier, and 30 prisoners for every civilian it detains."

While Israel pledges, according to the same source, “to stop all preparations to enter the city of Rafah by land, and to establish a complete ceasefire for one year, during which the implementation of moves to establish a Palestinian state will be announced.”
