Lapid attacking Netanyahu: If I were in his place, I would reject the Rafah operation in exchange for the return of the kidnapped people
Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid attacked Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, saying he does not want a swap deal "because he fears the disintegration of his ruling coalition."
Lapid stressed that it is impossible for the process of recovery of Israeli society to begin without the return of the prisoners who have been held by the resistance factions in the Gaza Strip since the seventh of last October.
He said that if he were prime minister, he would have refused to launch a military operation in Rafah in exchange for the return of the kidnapped people, noting that an exchange deal could have been concluded last December if the Netanyahu government had not tightened its position.
He added, "Every day we wait for more abductees to die, one after another," noting that "this government does nothing but cause harm to Israel's image in the world," as quoted by Israeli Channel 12.
Many are holding their breath waiting for the outcome of the latest round of negotiations in the war that has been ongoing in the Gaza Strip for about 7 months, which has been described as “the last chance.”
Many analysts attribute the sensitivity of the current round of negotiations to the developments that may result in the coming hours. Especially since Israel continues to threaten to invade Rafah if an agreement is not reached.
Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz announced that "if an agreement is reached, the (planned) military operation in Rafah will be suspended."
In light of recent developments, the families of Israeli detainees continue to demonstrate in several Israeli cities to put pressure on the Netanyahu government to conclude the deal.
These families interacted with a video clip published by the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Hamas movement, of two of the Israeli prisoners held by it talking about the conditions of their detention in Gaza, and commented on it by saying that “the (Israeli) military pressure led to the killing of dozens of prisoners in our hands and deprived the rest.” From celebrating Easter with their loved ones.
After the video was published, the families of the detainees said, “Israel must choose between Rafah and the deal.” She added, "The war must end and the price must be paid to return the detainees."
