Washington backs down from imposing sanctions on units in the Israeli army

Today, Friday, the Israeli Walla website reported that US President Joe Biden has frozen his decision to impose sanctions on the “Netzah Yehuda” battalion in the Israeli army.

Walla quoted American officials as saying that Biden decided to reconsider the decision after Israel conveyed information to him in recent days.

The American administration intended to impose sanctions on the "Netzah Yehuda" battalion, including cutting off military aid and not participating in any training with the American army, due to its serious humanitarian violations against the Palestinians in the West Bank.

Israel, along with parties in Congress, the Washington ambassador to Israel, and seniors in the US administration, exerted great pressure on Biden to prevent the decision, as according to the army’s judges, they held talks with their American counterparts and conveyed to them information about a video filmed on Tiktok from 2022 showing soldiers from the battalion being subjected to abuse. With Palestinian detainees, and the American administration was mainly relying on it in its decision.

Israel presented to the Americans the investigations that took place regarding the Taktuk tape, and clarified that it did not prosecute the soldiers, claiming that the Palestinians had not filed a complaint against them.

Israel expressed to the American side a great fear that if the decision was taken, it would be condemned by the International Criminal Court and its officers and soldiers would be exposed to legal and judicial accountability.

An American official confirmed to the Walla website that US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has not changed his position regarding the Netzah Yehuda Brigade committing serious humanitarian violations against the Palestinians, but rather is conducting consultations with Israel to examine whether it will act against the battalion, otherwise the American supply to it will be cut off.
