Six months later, the Israeli war on Gaza in numbers
With the continuation of the devastating Israeli, and possibly American, war on the besieged Gaza Strip since October 7, (this war) has become, after six months, “one of the most destructive, deadly and intractable conflicts of the twenty-first century,” according to the Associated Press.
The agency's report says, "Since the cross-border attack launched by Hamas on October 7, Israel has bombed the Gaza Strip without interruption, which led to the displacement of the vast majority of the population, and prompted many to flee to the city of Rafah, located in the far south of Gaza."
The United Nations says food has become scarce, famine is imminent, and only a small number of Palestinians have been able to leave the besieged Strip.
On the other hand, despite the passage of six months, the Hamas movement continues to fire rockets at Israel from Gaza, even though it is fighting a war within an imbalanced balance of power, as Israel fights with an American and Western militarization machine, the most powerful in history, and it fights Hamas with primitive, home-made weapons, and it does so. Hezbollah and other armed "Axis of Resistance" groups did the same from southern Lebanon, leading to an exchange of fighting that in turn resulted in the displacement of thousands of civilians on both sides of the border. Hamas has been holding hostages since October 7, in addition to the bodies of some of those who died in captivity.
During all this, ceasefire talks continue with no result in sight.
In its statistical report, the Associated Press will present a review of the war with numbers and statistics, “the main source of which is the Israeli army, the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office, the Ministry of Health in Gaza, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, and Associated Press reports.”
The report says: “The number of Palestinian deaths in Gaza reached more than 33 thousand, and the number of children killed in Gaza was more than 13 thousand, while on the Israeli side the number of deaths was about 1,200.”
The number of Palestinians killed in the West Bank reached 456, while the number of deaths in Lebanon was at least 343.
“The number of civilians and foreigners killed in Israel on October 7 reached 780, and 62 paramedics were killed in Israel on October 7, while the number of civilian deaths since October 7 in Israel along its northern border reached 9.”
At least 50 civilians were killed in Lebanon, 224 aid workers were killed in Gaza, including at least 30 killed in the line of duty, and 484 health workers and at least 95 journalists were killed in the Strip.
Israel claims, according to the agency, “The number of militants killed by Israel in Gaza reached more than 13,000, according to the Israeli army, while 256 Israeli soldiers were killed in the ground attack on the Strip, 314 soldiers were killed on October 7, and 11 soldiers were killed along Israel’s northern front since October 7).
In Lebanon, about 280 were killed, most of them Hezbollah.
As for the destruction and humanitarian situation in Gaza, the Associated Press says, “The percentage of buildings that are likely to be damaged or destroyed reached 55.9%, while the percentage of homes that are likely to be damaged reached more than 60%, and 90% is the percentage of damaged school buildings. As for the operating hospitals Their number is 10 out of 36.”
The United Nations says 1.1 million Palestinians face “catastrophic” food insecurity.
The percentage of children in northern Gaza under the age of 2 who suffer from acute malnutrition is 31%, while the percentage of students who are not enrolled in school is 100%.
The number of damaged mosques reached 227, while three churches were damaged.
The number of infected people in Gaza since October 7 reached 75,815, and 4,750 infected in the West Bank.
On the Israeli side, 1,549 soldiers were injured since the beginning of the ground attack, and 4,834 Israeli civilians were injured on October 7.
The number of displaced Palestinians currently in Gaza has reached 1.7 million (70% of the population), while the number of Israelis currently displaced from border communities has reached 90,000 people (less than 1% of the population).
The number of hostages taken by Hamas on October 7 was 253, and 123 people were freed hostages.
The number of hostages who are alive or whose death has not been confirmed is 98 people, including two who were captured before October 7.
The death of 36 hostages in Hamas captivity was confirmed, including two who were arrested before October 7. In return, Israel released 240 Palestinian prisoners during the week-long cessation of fighting.
The cost of damage to critical infrastructure in Gaza is estimated at $18.5 billion, according to a new report released by the World Bank and the United Nations on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, with financial support from the European Union. This is equivalent to 97% of the GDP of the West Bank and Gaza combined in 2022.
The interim damage assessment report used remote data collection sources to measure damage to physical infrastructure in critical sectors that occurred between October 2023 and the end of January 2024. The report concludes that damage to structures affects every sector of the economy. Housing represents 72% of costs. Infrastructure for public services such as water, health, and education represents 19%, and damage to commercial and industrial buildings represents 9%. For many sectors, the rate of damage appears to have stabilized as only a few assets remain intact. An estimated 26 million tons of debris and rubble were left in the wake of the devastation, an amount estimated to take years to remove.
