The death of sick prisoner Walid Daqqa in Israeli prisons

Sick prisoner Walid Daqqa dies in Israeli prisons on Sunday evening, according to what the Prisoners and Ex-Prisoners Affairs Authority confirmed.

The Prisoners' Affairs Authority said in a brief statement: "The prisoner Walid Daqqa dies inside the Israeli Assaf Harofeh Hospital due to the deterioration of his health condition."

The death of prisoner Walid Daqqa comes one day after Amnesty International today called on Israel to release prisoner Walid Daqqa from the city of Baqa al-Gharbiya, who suffers from spinal cord cancer, against the backdrop of his exposure since last October 7 to torture, humiliation, and medical neglect.

In a series of posts on the international organization’s account on the “X” platform, Amnesty International stated, “Palestinian prisoner Walid Daqqa suffers from spinal cord cancer, which is considered a rare medical condition.”

Amnesty International highlighted that Daqqa has been subjected to torture and humiliation since October 7, deprived of visits from his family, in addition to being subjected to medical neglect.

During this period, Daqqa was transferred to the hospital twice due to the deterioration of his health condition, according to the same source.

The international organization stressed "the need for the Israeli authorities to release Walid Daqqa immediately for humanitarian reasons, and allow him to spend the remainder of his life with his family."

On August 8, 2023, an Israeli court refused to release Palestinian prisoner Walid Daqqa early, despite the seriousness of his health condition.

Daqqa has completed his 37-year sentence since March 24, 2023, “but he is still arbitrarily detained after two years were added to his sentence in 2018, under the pretext of trying to help the prisoners by contacting their families.”

In December 2022, Daqqa was diagnosed with spinal cord cancer and multiple health problems, including respiratory diseases and inflammation of the right lung.
