WHO calls for an immediate end to the siege of Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza

The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, called on Friday for an immediate end to the “inhumane” siege imposed by the Israeli occupation forces on Al-Shifa Hospital north of Gaza City for 6 days.

Ghebreyesus said, in a post on his account on the “X” platform, “The conditions in Al-Shifa Hospital are absolutely inhumane, and accordingly we call for an immediate end to the siege.”

He stressed the need for safe access to the hospital to ensure that patients receive the care they need.

Ghebreyesus also published a testimony from a doctor from Al-Shifa Hospital that he sent to a United Nations employee, in which he said that “the patients are in critical condition, and many of them are lying on the ground.”

The doctor highlighted that "three patients needed intensive care, while two patients who were on life support died due to the power outage."

He pointed out that "there are no basic medical supplies, no dressings, and no medicines."

He continued, saying that "sounds of hostilities could be heard in the vicinity of the hospital."

He also expressed health workers' concerns about their safety and the safety of their patients.

In a previous post, Ghebreyesus said, “Access to Al-Shifa Hospital has become impossible, and there are reports of (Israel) arresting two health workers.”

He explained: "We have lost contact with health workers at Al-Shifa Hospital since the start of the ongoing Israeli attack, while we are seeking information about the condition of patients and whether they are receiving the necessary care."

He stressed that "access to Al-Shifa Hospital has now become impossible, and there are reports of the arrest and detention of health workers."

Ghebreyesus added, "A mission scheduled to Shifa today (Thursday) had to be canceled due to insecurity."

He pointed out that "the current situation could negatively affect the hospital's ability to operate, even at a minimal level, and deprive patients of life-saving critical care."

Ghebreyesus reiterated that "hospitals are not battlefields, and they must be protected in accordance with international humanitarian law."

For the sixth day, the Israeli army continues to storm “Al-Shifa Hospital,” which housed more than 7,000 patients and displaced persons. It carries out a massive arrest campaign among the displaced people inside the hospital and bombs the homes surrounding the hospital, leaving dozens dead and wounded.

On Wednesday, the Chief of Staff of the Israeli army, Herzi Halevy, acknowledged that the attack on the hospital aimed to “pressure” the Hamas movement during the ongoing negotiations in Qatar to reach a prisoner exchange deal.

This is the second time that the Israeli forces have stormed the hospital since the beginning of the war on Gaza on October 7, 2023. They stormed it on November 16, after besieging it for a week, during which its courtyards, parts of its buildings, medical equipment, and the electricity generator were destroyed.
