Extremist Israeli Minister of National Security Itamar Ben Gvir said that imprisoned Palestinian leader Marwan Barghouti was transferred from Ofer Prison to solitary confinement in another prison “for fear of an escalation,” without providing further details.

Ben Gvir wrote through his accounts, “I am happy that the Prison Service is working to implement my clear policy towards terrorists in prisons, and today it transferred the chief of killers, Marwan Barghouti, from Ofer Prison to solitary confinement after information emerged about plans to inflame matters.” He added, “The days in which he runs the Terrorists are our prisons!”

In this context, the private Israeli Channel 13 said, on Wednesday evening, that Marwan Barghouti’s transfer came “for fear of escalation, after the Prison Service received information indicating that he is working to incite and ignite a third intifada in the occupied West Bank,” as it claimed.

The Israeli forces arrested Marwan Barghouti in 2002 for his role in the second Palestinian intifada. At that time, he was the secretary of the Fatah movement in the West Bank and a member of its central committee. He was also a member of the Palestinian Legislative Council.

Marwan Barghouti is considered “the first Palestinian MP, and the first member of the Fatah Central Committee to be arrested by the Israeli authorities and sentenced to five life terms and 40 years in prison.”

Last December, the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth said that the Islamic Resistance Movement “Hamas” wants to release Marwan Barghouti, among other prisoners such as Abdullah Barghouti and Ahmed Saadat, through a prisoner exchange agreement with Israel.
