The Wall Street Journal: Israel wants to evacuate the residents of Rafah to 15 camps on the Egyptian border
A UN spokesman says we will not participate in forced or involuntary evacuation. There is no plan at the present time to facilitate the evacuation of civilians..!
The Israeli government proposed evacuating the residents of the city of Rafah to spacious tent cities, before the planned Israeli military attack on the city located in the southern Gaza Strip, according to a media report.
On Monday, the Wall Street Journal quoted Egyptian officials as describing Israel’s evacuation proposal, which stipulates the establishment of 15 camps.
Each camp will contain about 25,000 tents, in the southwestern part of the closed coastal area.
The newspaper added that Egypt, adjacent to the Rafah crossing, will be responsible for establishing camps and field hospitals.
The city is crowded with hundreds of thousands of internally displaced Palestinians, who seek shelter there in a very narrow space.
In the war against the “Hamas” movement, Israel is currently preparing to launch a military attack on the city, which it considers the last stronghold of “Hamas” in Gaza.
The newspaper reported that the proposal to evacuate residents was presented to Egypt in recent days.
The planned Israeli military attack on Rafah was met with strong international criticism.
The Israeli government called on United Nations organizations working in the region to help evacuate civilians from Rafah.
The spokesman for the United Nations Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric, said in New York on Monday that everything that happens in the southern part of the region on the border with Egypt must happen with full respect for the protection of the civilian population.
“We will not be a party to the forced displacement of residents,” Dujarric said. “Right now, there is no safe place in Gaza.”
In this context, the spokesman for the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs announced that Israel had not communicated with the office regarding a plan to evacuate the Rafah area in the Gaza Strip, either individually or jointly, adding that the office would not participate in any forced evacuation even if Israel contacted it in this regard.
The office's spokesman, Jens Laerke, said in response to a question from Reuters about the plan to attack Rafah, "Israeli officials never communicated with us officially."
He added: "Apart from this, the United Nations does not participate in forced or involuntary evacuations. There is no plan at the present time to facilitate the evacuation of civilians."
