Rights Watch: Israel detained thousands of workers from Gaza in humiliating conditions
Human Rights Watch International said that Israel detained thousands of workers from the Gaza Strip for weeks in inhuman and degrading conditions.
This came in a blog post published by the human rights organization, on Thursday, through its account on the “X” platform.
It explained that "the Israeli authorities detained thousands of workers from the Gaza Strip for several weeks in isolation from the outside world in inhuman and degrading conditions after the attacks of last October 7, and subjected at least some of them to inhuman and degrading treatment."
In this regard, Michelle Rendhawa, senior official for refugee and migrant rights at Human Rights Watch, said in a report published by the organization on its website on Wednesday evening, that “the Israeli authorities detained thousands of workers for weeks in isolation from the outside world without bringing charges against them, and subjected at least some of them to severe insulting treatment.”
It added, "The search for those who carried out or assisted in the attacks of last October 7 does not justify attacks on workers who had obtained permits to work in Israel."
By October 7, approximately 18,500 workers from Gaza had been granted permits to work in Israel, although the number of those who were in Israel at that time is not clear.
On December 19 and 21, Human Rights Watch wrote to the Israeli army and the Israeli Prison Service presenting its findings and requesting comment, but had not received any response at the time of writing.
