Washington: We see no indications that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza

US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told Al-Quds.com's correspondent regarding the US administration's position on the end of the aggression on Gaza, and that America still supports Israel in achieving its declared goals of eliminating the Islamic resistance movement Hamas.

“We are still in the middle of this conflict (this battle), and Israel has spoken about the fact that it will continue this war, and we support that,” Miller said.

“You've heard us talk about the fact that we've been engaged in discussions with them (with the Israelis) about where the conflict is going and when they can shift to a less intense combat operation,” Miller added. “And we will continue to engage in those conversations with them. They have killed a number of Hamas fighters. It is clear that "The Hamas leadership is still intact in Gaza, and they (the Israelis) are continuing to pursue them, and that is still a goal that we consider worthwhile. When and how this will end is not something I want to speculate on from here."

Regarding whether he means that Israel must continue this war until these goals are achieved, Miller said, “I will answer that by referring to the principles that we have set for how we see the future of Gaza. This is Gaza that is under Palestinian rule, but Gaza cannot serve as a starting point for attacks.” Terrorists against innocent civilians in Israel."

Regarding whether the killing and destruction committed by Israel amounts to genocide, Miller said that the United States does not see any indications of genocide in Gaza, and considers providing humanitarian assistance to the residents of the Strip a priority.

In response to a request for comment on the lawsuit filed by South Africa against Israel for genocide at the International Court of Justice in The Hague, Miller said: “Genocide is certainly a heinous crime, one of the worst crimes that anyone can commit, and accusations of it should not be taken lightly. As for the United States, we do not see actions indicating the commission of genocide.”

In response to a question about whether the ministry was “concerned about being drawn into this matter,” the State Department spokesman added that Washington continues to investigate war crimes and crimes against humanity, and considers providing humanitarian assistance to the residents of Gaza a priority.

Last Friday, the International Court of Justice announced that South Africa had submitted a request to initiate procedures against Israel for what it described as “acts of genocide against the Palestinian people” in the Gaza Strip.

“South Africa asserted that Israel’s actions and omissions bear the character of genocide because they are accompanied by the specific intent required to eliminate the Palestinians of Gaza as part of the broader national and racial ethnic group, that is, the Palestinians,” the International Court of Justice said in a statement.

In turn, National Security Council Strategic Communications Coordinator John Kirby said that the Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas still has great power in Gaza.

Kirby added in a press conference in Washington that the Israeli army was able to neutralize a large number of Hamas leaders, members and infrastructure, which had an impact on the movement’s ability to command and control, according to him.

Kirby added that military operations cannot eliminate ideologies, stressing that it is not likely that Israel will get rid of all Hamas fighters, but on the other hand, he stressed that military operations can eliminate the main threat posed by what he describes as terrorist organizations.

He added that the Israeli army is capable of "eliminating the threat that Hamas poses to the Israeli people," but added, "Will its ideology be eliminated? No. Is there a possibility that the group will be eliminated? Probably not."

The American official pledged that Washington would work to maintain the American military presence in the Middle East, noting that President Joe Biden continues to receive briefings on the situation in the region.

Kirby added that Washington does not want the war launched by Israel in the Gaza Strip to expand and spread to other fronts.
