China calls on the international community to push for a ceasefire in Gaza

A Chinese envoy called on the international community to push for a ceasefire in Gaza.

Geng Shuang, China's Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, said that more than 80 days have passed since the outbreak of this round of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, which plunged more than two million innocent people in Gaza into an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe.

This is despite the fact that the United Nations General Assembly and the Security Council have respectively adopted a number of resolutions, which strongly call for a ceasefire, an end to the collective punishment of innocent people in Gaza, and compliance by the occupying power with international law and international humanitarian law, he said.

He told the Security Council that the international community must do its utmost to push for a ceasefire, mitigate the severity of the disaster, and save lives.

He warned that prolonging the war would only lead to more casualties on both sides, exacerbate obstacles to the delivery of humanitarian aid, and undermine the prospects for reaching a political settlement.

Geng pointed out that there is no safe place in Gaza and hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, who have been repeatedly forced to move, have nowhere else to go.

He stated, "China urges Israel to immediately stop its indiscriminate military attacks and collective punishment of the residents of Gaza, and to provide the necessary conditions for humanitarian agencies to carry out their work in providing aid in Gaza."

He said that the current humanitarian situation in Gaza is extremely dangerous, as life-saving supplies are running out, the medical system is paralyzed, the social system is on the verge of collapse, tens of thousands of pregnant women are at risk of extreme hunger, and newborn babies are deprived of nutrition due to malnutrition. Their mothers.

China calls on all parties to effectively and fully implement Security Council Resolution 2720, which seeks to strengthen the provision of humanitarian assistance in Gaza. China looks forward to early establishing a mechanism to ensure the safe and unimpeded entry of sufficient humanitarian supplies into Gaza.

He pointed out that the essence of the long-standing Palestinian-Israeli issue lies in the failure to implement the two-state solution and the failure to guarantee the basic rights of the Palestinian people.

Geng said that China calls for holding a broader and more effective international peace conference, in order to accelerate the formation of a timetable on the road map necessary to implement the two-state solution, adding that China supports granting Palestine full membership in the United Nations and also supports the early resumption of direct negotiations between Palestine and Israel.
