Guterres rejects the establishment of a UN-sponsored “protection system” in Gaza after the war
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres refused to establish a “protection system” under the auspices of the United Nations in the Gaza Strip after the end of the current war, according to what was reported by the German News Agency.
Guterres said in a press conference yesterday (Monday): “I do not believe that a protection system under the auspices of the United Nations in Gaza is the solution,” and called, instead, for a transitional phase in which the United States and Arab countries participate.
He added: “Everyone must come together to create the necessary conditions for a transitional process that allows a strong Palestinian authority to assume responsibility in Gaza, and then, based on that, finally move in a firm and irreversible manner, towards a two-state solution based on the principles established by the international community to a significant limit which I have repeatedly identified.”
He continued: “I believe we need a multilateral approach in which various countries and entities cooperate.”
He concluded: “For Israel, the United States is, of course, the main guarantor of its security. For the Palestinians, neighboring countries and Arab countries in the region are essential.
