Twitter chief Elon Musk, who aims to make the network a "multipurpose" application, announced Tuesday that it will soon be possible to make voice and video calls from the platform.
He said on Twitter, "Voice and video chats will be added to your account soon to any user of this platform, which will allow you to talk to people anywhere in the world without giving them your phone number."
Thus, Twitter will provide a tool similar to the one currently available on Instagram and Facebook in particular.
The billionaire, who bought the platform for $44 billion at the end of October, plans to make it possible to encrypt private messages on Wednesday.
"This system will quickly become more complex," he wrote.
Since taking over Twitter, Elon Musk has made a series of changes, adding new features to the service, sometimes in chaotic fashion.
In November, he announced his intention to turn Twitter into a "multi-purpose" application allowing, among other things, encrypted messages, long tweets and payment methods.
