After his former supporter and advisor sharply criticized the tax relief plan, US President Donald Trump revealed that he is "disappointed" in Elon Musk.
Trump said Thursday that the world's richest man misses being in the White House and is suffering from "Trump Depression Syndrome."
The president also addressed his split with Musk to reporters in the Oval Office, while Musk continued a series of social media posts attacking the bill, warning that it would increase the federal deficit.
"I'm very disappointed in Elon," Trump said. "I've helped Elon a lot."
Musk called Trump's massive tax relief bill a "disgusting act."
"false claim"
In contrast, in a post on X, Musk wrote, "Wrong. This bill was never even presented to me and was passed in the middle of the night so quickly that almost no one in Congress could even read it!"
After officially leaving the Trump administration last week, Musk publicly denounced the House reconciliation bill, describing it this week as a "disgusting, abhorrent act."
The version narrowly passed by the House of Representatives would extend Trump's 2017 tax cuts, eliminate taxes on tips and overtime, increase funding for immigration enforcement and the military, reduce Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, and raise the debt ceiling by $4 trillion.
The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, in a new estimate released Wednesday, projects that this legislation will add $2.4 trillion to the national debt over the next decade.
