A jury in San Francisco, USA, has convicted seven pro-Palestinian activists for their involvement in blocking the famous 'Golden Gate' Bridge during a demonstration in 2024. These protests took place within a broader movement across the United States condemning the ongoing Israeli genocide in the Gaza Strip and demanding an end to the military and political support provided by Washington to Tel Aviv.
San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins stated in an official announcement that the seven demonstrators faced convictions on six different misdemeanor charges. These charges included obstructing traffic on the vital bridge, refusing to comply with security forces' orders to disperse the gathering, and participating in an unauthorized demonstration, which led to traffic paralysis in the area at the time.
Despite the convictions on the aforementioned misdemeanors, the jury failed to reach a final decision on the more serious charge of 'criminal conspiracy.' This charge is considered a grave offense, with potential penalties under US law reaching up to 15 years in prison, as it requires proof of a prior agreement between two or more individuals to commit a criminal act beyond mere peaceful protest.
For their part, the activists' lawyers defended their clients, asserting that the motives behind blocking the bridge were purely ethical and humanitarian, aimed at drawing attention to the devastation in Gaza. The defense team indicated that the demonstrators resorted to this escalatory tactic after exhausting all traditional means of expressing their views, including writing to members of Congress and organizing protests that did not lead to a change in US policy.
This trial reflects the legal and political tension within the US regarding pro-Palestinian activities, especially those targeting public facilities or universities. Protesters continuously demand that educational institutions and American companies disassociate themselves from the Israeli military system, considering that silence on what is happening in Gaza constitutes participation in the crimes committed against civilians.
The demonstrators acted out of what they considered a moral responsibility to oppose the destruction caused by the Israeli war in Gaza.
