Washington's Message

News Analysis
Recent data, based on a report issued by Oxfam International and relying on United Nations documents, has revealed an unprecedented escalation in levels of violence, killing, and displacement in the occupied Palestinian territories, amidst accelerating Israeli settlement and annexation projects, and the continued political, military, and diplomatic support provided by the United States to Israel, despite increasing international condemnations.
According to the data in the report, the number of Palestinians killed in the occupied West Bank between 2023 and 2025 reached 1,244 people, a figure that exceeds the total number of victims who fell during the previous seventeen years combined, which was 1,036 killed. This sharp increase reflects a dangerous shift in the nature of the confrontation within the occupied territories, where settler and military violence has become more organized and widespread than ever before.
The figures indicate that Palestinian children have paid a heavy price for this escalation, with 268 children killed during the same period, a number exceeding the toll of children who died during the previous seventeen years. Children now constitute more than one-fifth of the total victims who have fallen in the occupied Palestinian territories over the past two decades, highlighting the scale of the humanitarian tragedy experienced by Palestinian society.
The escalation did not stop at the end of 2025, as Oxfam America reported that the first three months of 2026 witnessed more than 540 attacks carried out by settlers against Palestinians and their property, in addition to the killing of 33 Palestinians during that period alone, indicating an acceleration in the pace of attacks and the absence of any deterrent measures by the occupation authorities.
In parallel, the West Bank witnessed a widespread wave of forced displacement, with approximately 46,000 Palestinians uprooted from their homes in recent years, a figure more than three times the number of displaced persons during the fourteen years preceding this period. This comes within the context of a continuous Israeli policy aimed at emptying vast areas of Palestinian land for the benefit of settlement expansion and imposing new demographic realities on the ground.
Civilian infrastructure has also been subjected to repeated attacks, with reports indicating that more than sixty water and sanitation facilities, including water tanks and main supply lines, were targeted or vandalized during the first months of 2026 alone. These attacks exacerbate humanitarian conditions, especially in rural and Bedouin communities that rely on these facilities to secure the minimum necessities of life.
These developments come at a time when the occupation government faces increasing accusations from international human rights organizations of seeking to accelerate the de facto annexation of large parts of the West Bank, through expanding settlements, tightening restrictions on Palestinians, and institutionalizing a discriminatory system that grants settlers legal and security privileges not enjoyed by the indigenous population.
These figures reveal that what is happening in the West Bank is no longer merely a series of isolated security incidents, as Israel tries to portray it, but has become a systematic pattern of violence directly linked to an expansionist settlement project. The sharp increase in the number of dead and displaced within a relatively short period reflects the occupation's transition to a more aggressive phase, where army operations intertwine with settler attacks within a political environment that provides protection and impunity. This reality makes talk of a “conflict” between two equal parties far from the truth of the existing power dynamics on the ground.
This escalation cannot be separated from the political umbrella provided by Washington to Israel. Despite repeated UN reports and widespread human rights condemnations, successive US administrations continue to protect Israel in international forums and provide it with massive military aid. With Trump's return to the White House, the Israeli government appears more confident in its ability to proceed with annexation and settlement expansion policies without fear of serious American pressure, which sends a clear message that violations will not incur any real political cost.
The targeting of civilian infrastructure, especially water and sanitation facilities, carries implications beyond direct material damage. Tampering with water sources in an environment already suffering from restrictions and deprivation aims to make daily life more difficult and gradually push residents to leave. Therefore, many observers view these policies as part of a broader strategy to reshape the demographic map of the West Bank, serving the goals of settlement expansion and reducing the Palestinian presence in targeted areas.
The significant increase in child victims reveals the failure of the international community to provide minimum protection for Palestinian civilians. When children constitute more than one-fifth of violence victims over two decades, it reflects not only the scale of force used but also the absence of international will to hold those responsible for violations accountable. While Western capitals continue to speak of human rights and international law, the gap between rhetoric and actual practice on the ground widens, putting the credibility of these positions to an increasingly difficult moral and political test.
Given the continuation of this trajectory, the West Bank appears to be entering a more dangerous phase, where settlement expansion is accompanied by escalating violence, displacement, and the targeting of basic necessities of life. While international warnings about the repercussions of these policies are increasing, Israel continues to impose new realities on the ground, benefiting from the political and diplomatic protection provided by Washington. Observers fear that the continuation of this approach will undermine any chance for a just political settlement and turn the West Bank into an open arena for further clashes and instability in the coming years.
