Washington Accuses Beijing of 'Intimidation' After Obstructing Taiwanese President's Trip to Africa

The US administration has sharply criticized China, accusing it of launching a widespread diplomatic intimidation campaign targeting Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te. This stance came after Taipei found itself forced to cancel an official presidential visit to the African continent due to airspace closures for the president's aircraft.

Official sources clarified that several countries, including Seychelles, Mauritius, and Madagascar, suddenly and without prior notice withdrew transit permits for the Taiwanese presidential plane. This unexpected measure prevented the Taiwanese president from reaching his destination in the Kingdom of Eswatini, sparking a wave of political tension in the region.

For its part, the Taiwanese government affirmed that the direct reason behind this sudden reversal by African countries was the intense pressure exerted by Beijing. Authorities in Taipei indicated that China used economic coercion to force these countries to make decisions that serve China's political agenda aimed at isolating the island internationally.

In Washington, a spokesperson for the US State Department expressed the country's deep concern over these reports, which reflect escalating tension. The State Department stated in an official statement that the actions of these countries were a direct response to Chinese requests, emphasizing that Washington is closely monitoring attempts to undermine the movements of the Taiwanese leadership.

On the other hand, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the positions of the countries that canceled the permits, considering that they adhered to the 'One China principle'. Beijing praised what it described as respect for international law, affirming that these steps enhance global recognition of China's sovereignty over all its territories, including Taiwan.

Guo Jiakun, spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, rejected the American accusations outright, describing them as lacking factual basis. Jiakun said that Washington is irresponsibly interfering in legitimate measures taken by his country to protect its national sovereignty, considering the American statements a distortion of facts and a mixing of issues.

Eswatini, formerly known as Swaziland, is one of the few countries that currently maintain full diplomatic relations with Taiwan. China is intensifying its diplomatic and economic efforts to persuade the remaining 12 countries to sever ties with Taipei and instead recognize the Beijing government as the sole representation of China.

This incident comes in the context of a long-standing conflict, where China considers Taiwan a breakaway province that must be reunified, and does not rule out the use of military force to achieve this. The United States continues to support Taiwan politically and militarily, making the island a constant point of friction in relations between the two great powers.

These countries are acting at China's request, which is a new example of Beijing's intimidation campaign against Taiwan and its allies.
