The head of the Jewish Agency, retired Major General Doron Almog, canceled a planned visit to South Africa for fear of an arrest warrant being issued against him, in light of the genocide being committed by the occupation in the Gaza Strip.
The Jewish Agency is a public body that serves as the executive arm of the Zionist movement, aimed at encouraging Jewish immigration to Palestine. After the declaration of the establishment of the occupying state in 1948, its name became "The Jewish Agency for Israel."
The official Hebrew broadcasting authority reported on Sunday that Almog was scheduled to visit South Africa and meet with the Jewish community there, without mentioning the date of the canceled visit.
The authority considered South Africa to be one of the most hostile countries to the occupation in the world, and it is suing it before the International Court of Justice in The Hague on charges of war crimes and genocide in the Gaza Strip.
In late 2023, South Africa filed a lawsuit against the occupation before the International Court of Justice on the grounds that it violated the United Nations Convention of 1948 on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.
The broadcasting authority stated: "Prior to Almog's travel, an assessment of the situation took place, after which it was decided to cancel the visit for fear that anti-Israel entities would seek to issue an arrest warrant against him."
The authority did not clarify the role played by the Jewish Agency or its head in the Israeli genocide in Gaza, but Almog had previously led the southern region of the occupying army between 2000 and 2003 before being appointed to his position in June 2022.
In 2005, an arrest warrant was issued against Almog in Britain due to his involvement in the demolition of about 50 Palestinian homes in Rafah, southern Gaza, and at that time he was forced to return without leaving the plane, according to the same source.
Since the beginning of the genocide in the Gaza Strip, legal actions against officials and soldiers of the occupying army have increased by international human rights organizations supportive of the Palestinians in various countries around the world.
