The media advisor for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), Adnan Abu Hasna, sounded the alarm about the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, confirming that "Gaza residents are suffering from a very severe famine" caused by the occupation. These statements come at a time when Gaza is enduring harsh humanitarian conditions due to the ongoing blockade.
Abu Hasna clarified that the Gaza Strip "has exceeded more than the internationally recognized criteria for famine," noting that the repercussions of this humanitarian disaster "have significantly mobilized the international community." He emphasized that the situation requires an urgent response from the international community to save lives.
What is urgently required from the occupation is to allow the entry of relief trucks through all crossings, as UNRWA has 6,000 trucks loaded with humanitarian aid ready for immediate entry into the sector. This amount is "sufficient to feed the residents of Gaza for months," but it needs the occupation's permission.
Abu Hasna criticized the exclusion of UNRWA from the distribution of the few aid shipments currently entering, which exacerbates the difficulty of delivering aid to those in need. This exclusion increases the suffering of the population who are in dire need of assistance.
In conclusion, Abu Hasna warned that any ground invasion of Gaza would lead to "a severe deterioration of health conditions" that would be uncontrollable. He pointed out that there is "a global movement to change the circumstances surrounding Gaza," expressing hope that this movement translates into real pressure to open the crossings and end the famine.
132,000 children will suffer from acute malnutrition, and treating them will be nearly impossible.
