Israeli experts suggest less harmful alternatives to the option of occupying Gaza.

The Israelis continue to view the plan to occupy what they claim are the remaining Hamas strongholds in Gaza as a precursor to disaster, and it may even strengthen Hamas. The cabinet's decision is seen as contrary to the army's position, which has increased panic among them, prompting the government to compare the bad options regarding Gaza and to explore which is less harmful.

Dani Orbach and Jonathan Pocksman, authors of the study "Genocide in Gaza," along with Yariv Moher, a researcher in political violence, published a joint article in which they stated that "the entire Gaza Strip should have been occupied from the beginning, but the exhaustion suffered by soldiers and society, in addition to the waste of Israeli political capital around the world, makes this step dangerous."

They added that occupying Gaza at this stage, where Palestinians are suffering from a severe humanitarian crisis and without preparations for effective governance mechanisms, is a precursor to disaster. There are concerns about the acute erosion of the army and civil society due to the danger to the lives of the remaining detainees in Hamas's hands.

Experts also pointed to the prevailing doubts that extremist elements in the government will exploit their influence to push for the establishment of settlements after controlling the sector. Given the international outrage over the escalation of violent fighting to include areas populated by Gazans, the hasty occupation of the remaining Hamas strongholds is likely to create a social rift that serves the enemies of the state.

The experts indicated that an alternative for the government regarding Gaza can be presented, which, while not an ideal model, is the lesser of evils in light of the time that has passed without a decision. The military history of the twentieth century clearly shows that it is not possible to change a regime without effective control over the population, whether militarily or through a strong alternative government from within.

They emphasized that before making a decision to eliminate the remaining Hamas strongholds, the army should extend its control over the parts of the sector it controls and establish the necessary physical and governmental infrastructure to house the Palestinians and provide them with food and services.

The experts added that this alternative includes giving the army the opportunity to conduct a thorough examination of the Palestinians by moving to the areas under its control, initiating intensive reconstruction operations, and providing humanitarian solutions, which may undermine Hamas's legitimacy in the eyes of Gazans.

They pointed out that Israeli attempts to devise improvised solutions by expanding an incomplete basic model that includes hundreds of thousands of Gazans will ensure a humanitarian and moral failure, as well as a political and military one.
