The Russian Foreign Ministry said that the storming of Al-Aqsa Mosque by Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Jewish extremists was a "provocative act."
The ministry said in a statement on Wednesday that the Israeli government "must take the necessary precautions against actions that would disrupt the status quo of the holy sites."
"Moscow is deeply concerned about this provocative act by Ben-Gvir," she added.
“The Israeli government should not only condemn, but also stop actions that disrupt the status quo regarding the holy sites in Jerusalem, as stipulated in the 1994 Jordan-Israel Peace Agreement,” she added.
The Russian Foreign Ministry stressed that "such steps lead to the exacerbation of extremist sentiments in Israeli and Palestinian societies and undermine international initiatives to reduce tension in the Gaza Strip."
