Guterres is “terrified” by the Israeli attack on ambulances outside Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza

On Saturday, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed his horror at the Israeli attack on a convoy of ambulances outside Al-Shifa Hospital in the Gaza Strip.

A UN statement quoted Guterres as saying, “I am horrified by the attack... The images of bodies scattered in the street outside the hospital are horrific.”

He added, “Now, for about a month, civilians in Gaza, including children and women, are still besieged, deprived of aid, killed, and forced to leave their homes as a result of bombing... This must stop.”

Guterres described the humanitarian situation in Gaza as horrific, saying that the food, water, and medicine arriving are hardly sufficient for people's needs, and that the fuel needed to operate hospitals and water stations is running out.

He added, “UNRWA (the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees) shelters are being bombed, the morgues are full, and the shops are empty... We see an increase in diseases and breathing problems, especially among children... An entire people is suffering from shock and no place is safe.”

Guterres renewed his call for a ceasefire in Gaza for humanitarian reasons, saying that “supplies, basic services and humanitarian aid must be allowed to enter safely and without hindrance and in a manner commensurate with the tragic situation in Gaza,” according to what was reported by the Arab World News Agency.

He also stressed the need for all influential people to exercise their influence in order to “ensure respect for the rules of war, end suffering, and avoid the extension of the conflict, which may spread to the entire region.”
