Sudan resumes diplomatic relations with Iran “to serve the common interests of the two countries”
Sudan announced Monday that it will resume diplomatic relations with Iran. This comes seven years after it was cut off and three months after a meeting between the foreign ministers of the two countries. Sudan severed its diplomatic relations with Iran in 2016 after storming the Saudi Arabian embassy in Tehran.
The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement Monday that Sudan will resume its diplomatic relations with Iran.
The ministry added that the decision to resume relations came after a number of high-level contacts between the two countries and that it would serve the common interests of both countries.
This comes seven years after the severing of relations between the two countries and three months after a meeting between the foreign ministers of the two countries.
Saudi Arabia and Iran, mediated by China, agreed to resume relations last March, which raised expectations that Tehran and other Arab countries would fully resume diplomatic relations.
In addition, no statement has been issued yet from Iran, but its Foreign Minister Hussein Amir Abdullahian said last July that the two countries are working to resume relations after his meeting with Acting Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Al-Sadiq in Baku.
It is noteworthy that Sudan, which is currently going through a devastating war, cut off its diplomatic relations with Iran in 2016 after the storming of the Saudi Arabian embassy in Tehran.
