Biden confirms Washington will not abandon Ukraine despite agreement to avoid a closure
US President Joe Biden confirmed on Sunday that the United States will not abandon Ukraine, even though providing aid to it was excluded from an agreement to avoid a government shutdown, calling on Republicans to “stop the games” in this regard.
Biden said in an intervention from the White House, "I want to assure our American allies, the American people, and the people in Ukraine that you can count on our support. We will not withdraw."
He added that there is a "prevailing sense of urgency" for Congress to approve a new aid package for Ukraine in the coming days and weeks to support it in defeating the Russian invasion.
The agreement reached by Congress late Saturday to avoid the closure of US federal institutions did not include any new wartime aid to Ukraine, under a compromise between Democrats and Republicans calling for spending cuts.
Democratic President Joe Biden criticized Republicans, calling on Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy to avoid the specter of another shutdown when the 45-day temporary agreement expires.
"I'm sick and tired of brinksmanship," Biden said, speaking from the Roosevelt Room in the White House.
The US President added, "The policy of brinksmanship must end. There should not be another crisis."
