Haaretz: Iran-backed Hamas official trying to set West Bank ablaze

The deputy head of Hamas' political bureau and the head of its office in the West Bank, Saleh al-Arouri, is trying to escalate the situation in the occupied West Bank with Iranian funding, Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported on Friday.

Al-Arouri, who is facing deportation from Turkey to Lebanon, has been trying to ramp up attacks against Israeli targets as well as undermine the Palestinian Authority.

The leader's main West Bank policy is to consolidate the "unity of arenas" – meaning that armed groups and popular resistance in the West Bank will respond whenever there is a flare-up in another Palestinian arena, such as the Gaza Strip and Jerusalem, or even from refugee camps beyond the borders, similar to what was seen in May 2021.

Haaretz also pointed out that the Israeli security establishment is also concerned about the nascent attempts to establish a primitive missile infrastructure in Jenin, the possible use of drones to carry out attacks, and the manufacture of explosive devices.
