Smotrich to present plan to limit activities of Palestinian Authority

Israel's Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said on Wednesday that he will present a motion to the cabinet to limit the activities of the Palestinian Authority, according to Israeli Army Radio.

Smotrich, who also oversees the settlement portfolio in the Defense Ministry, said that he would seek to classify some of the Palestinian Authority's pursuits as "hostile political activity."

After Israel's two-day invasion of Jenin, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that he would ensure that the Palestinian Authority wouldn't collapse, though he did not offer any concrete steps for respite to the beleaguered authority.

In an update to the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Security Committee, Smotrich said that his decision is driven both by financial considerations and part of his campaign against the Palestinian Authority attempts to "seize" land in Area C of the West Bank, which is under Israeli civilian and military control according to the Oslo Accords.

In the same Knesset committee, the Israeli military commander of the occupied West Bank confirmed that 95% of building permit requests by Palestinians in the Area C of the West Bank are rejected.
