Tlaib to boycott Herzog's Congress address

Washington – Palestinian-American Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib announced Monday that she will join other Democratic lawmakers in boycotting Israeli President Isaac Herzog's speech to a joint session of Congress this week.

Representative Tlaib wrote on Twitter, "In solidarity with the Palestinian people and all those who have been harmed by Israel's apartheid government, I will be boycotting President Herzog’s joint address to Congress."

"I urge all Members of Congress who stand for human rights for all to join me. #BoycottApartheid," she added.

Tlaib joins Ilhan Omar, Jamal Bowman, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in boycotting Herzog's speech. The group of lawmakers supports conditioning U.S. aid to Israel on respect for Palestinian human rights.

The Michigan representative has held a ceremony to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba in the Senate building, and has worked to advance a U.S. investigation into the killing of Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in May of last year in Jenin.

In 2019, Tlaib and Omar were barred from entering the occupied West Bank due to their calls for the boycott of Israel.

According to the White House, U.S. President Biden will host President Israel Herzog at the White House on Tuesday afternoon, accompanied by Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, before he addresses Congress on Wednesday. Herzog's three day visit will also include visits Capitol Hill and the United Nations.
