Gallant vetoes a law on the bodies of martyrs
The Hebrew newspaper Israel Hayom reported, on Wednesday morning, that the Israeli Minister of Defense, Yoav Gallant, vetoed the promotion of a bill that would prevent the return of the bodies of Palestinian martyrs who are being held.
Likud MK Eliyahu Ravvivo sought to present the bill to the Ministerial Committee for Legislative Affairs next Sunday, and it was put on the agenda, but in light of Gallant's strong objection to the proposal, it was withdrawn, and it will not be brought to a vote.
The bill provides for the detention of the body of any Palestinian who carries out an attack and burial in the cemetery of numbers, while leaving the discretion of the Israeli prime minister alone to decide the return of the bodies for special considerations.
The newspaper pointed out that the draft law enjoys wide support from the coalition and the opposition, and previously submitted similar projects.
Sources familiar with the details told the Hebrew newspaper that Galant told government coalition officials that the law would not achieve its goals and would only lead to igniting the situation.
While Gallant's office said that the detention of corpses does not affect "terrorist organizations", except in exceptional cases related to "Hamas terrorists" and we are preparing for such cases, and therefore there is no need for this law. According to his words and expression.
