Arrests and criticism.. Israeli security leaders describe settler attacks as terrorist
Last night, the leaders of the Israeli security services described the settler attacks as "terrorist", which angered the far-right ministers in Benjamin Netanyahu's government.
A joint statement by the head of the Shin Bet, Ronen Bar, the Chief of Staff of the Israeli Army, Herzi Halevi, and the Police Commissioner, Kobi Shabtai, said after their meeting on Saturday evening, “In recent days, attacks have taken place by Israeli citizens against innocent Palestinians in the occupied areas. West Bank, these attacks are against all moral and Jewish values, and they are also national terrorism in every sense of the word, and we are obligated to fight them."
The joint statement considered that these attacks by settlers increase Palestinian reactions, harm Israel and the international legitimacy of the Israeli security services in "fighting Palestinian terrorism", and distract them from their primary mission in this regard. According to the statement.
The Israeli security leaders affirmed their commitment to continue to act decisively and by all means to preserve what they described as security and law in the West Bank, and to increase forces to prevent these events, and to expand arrests, including administrative ones, against those who work in a violent and extremist way inside Palestinian villages. referring to the settlers.
The statement called on settler leaders to publicly condemn these violent acts and join in standing against them.
According to the Hebrew website Ynet, the Israeli army requested the evacuation of 7 settlement outposts established during the past few days, but the political leadership objected, and this was not discussed tonight.
Senior officials in the administration of US President Joe Biden said that they greatly appreciated the joint declaration by Israeli security leaders against settler violence, and considered this an unusual declaration of great importance, stressing the need to work to stop these attacks.
In the context, it was announced on Sunday morning that the Shin Bet security service had arrested an Israeli soldier who was on leave, on suspicion of his involvement in the violent incidents that took place yesterday evening, in the village of Umm Safa, near Ramallah.
The leaders of the far-right parties in the Israeli government, Itamar Ben Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, criticized this step by the Israeli security leaders, considering it a harsh and discriminatory step against settlers and settlements.
